Learning Experience

Updated: Oct 24

How to get a "WOW" effect to a learning experience? Keep in mind your audience, not only learners, but all touch points that learners, facilitators, coaches, teachers, and trainers have with the learning experience.

In May I had the pleasure to attend a Learning Design intro workshop which was facilitated by Mukamas Learning Design team. As part of the workshop, we brainstormed in groups on what makes that WOW effect on learning. The conclusions were as follows.

Things to consider before a learning event:

- participate learners in the planning phase

- map connections between learning goals and what participants do in practice in their profession

- connect educators with participants and participants with one another (bear in mind GDPR and that you have required permissions).

During a learning event:

- consider learning experience's dramatic structure

- bring up feelings

- have a variation on the learning pace

- have a surprise moment, include something unexpected

- unite participants

- Include movement

I would also courage to design for how continuous learning takes place in the learning experience.

- Consider how learning effectiveness could be measured and followed up? Why not include learning participants to this discussion?

- Perhaps sparring teams can help to take learning into practice and keep on developing those skills?

All in all, always consider the learning experience as a whole, step into to learner's shoes, and reflect on their journey..
